How many sides of a character do I need

Do I need to draw the front, back , side and 3/4 of the character I want to animate?

You need to draw everything
This is not a 3D software, you can do like paper-cut animation with bitmaps (images) or trace everything as vector and then move the poisition of vertices.
It is up to you.

Depending your type of animation, you could do only the front and use some controlers like here :
