Why is Canvas Metadata empty for new canvases?

I’m just writing the Manual page for the Grid at the moment, and I’m wondering why the Canvas MetaData is initially empty for a new canvas. Is this a bug or a feature?

If I want to show the grid I have to add the grid_show key by hand and then enter 1 or true for it. It seems inconsistent as the canvas does have a grid state, yet it’s not recorded in the metadata.

It is a bug. It should be updated from start.
