What is the workflow when animating from sketches?

I am new to Synfig.
I did manage to import the sketch I had hand-drawn.
I suppose I need to create a new layer above it where I can draw the first frame. But I see there’s all kinds of layers to choose from (I was not expecting this). What kind of layer should I choose for this purpose?
Or this may not be the right work flow, is it?

I would appreciate it very much if someone could enlighten me.

Thanks guys

Hi, good day.
ok, there are some things about synfig that you will know first:
1- the frames on synfig dont work like another 2D programs, in the tradicional 2D programs the layer and the timeline work in the same window, on synfig the layers are a separed thing of the time line, imagine this:
a 2D program have sex with a 3D program and from synfig is born, because the timeline work like the most 3Dprograms, but you are make 2D animation.
2- every time that you make a vector shape you will make a layer.
