Synfig crashing randomly Windows 10

Hi guys,

We currently are using synfig in our school for teaching the students animation and for thier coursework.

We have upgraded to the latest version 1.4.1 due to the crashing on 1.3.10.

Cant work out why the crashing is happening and how to remedy it as the crash logs are just jibberish to me.

Please see below for the crash log.

Looks like Synfig is installed in C:\Program Files\Synfig\bin\ directory

Can you do the following:

  1. Browse to that directory
  2. Launch Command Prompt (it’ll be in File menu)
  3. Execute .\synfigstudio.exe
  4. Use the program normally until it crashes
  5. (Synfig crashed) Capture the command prompt output and upload here.

The final output might be informative (
or might not)

Like you, I can’t understand the crash log you posted :frowning:

I also use Synfig on Windows 10, and I have never seen it crash “randomly”, according to my experience it crashes if

  1. sometimes: it renders something heavily (a file that has too many layers) or
  2. converting a parameter to something that isn’t yet implemented or
  3. sometimes: moving the layer by dragging and dropping in the Layers Panel.

Please specify when the crash occurs, and also if possible give steps to reproduce the crash.

Could you please enumerate examples?

Does it still happen with 1.4.1?

I think we should try to use Google BreakPad for deal with such problems.
I never used it though.

Basically we should export the debug symbols for each Synfig release to be able to get a useful backtrace and user be able to send us crash reports.

Hi guys,

Sorry my sinfig knowledge is a complete novice so getting it to crash means i need to learn how to use it first.

Just had a student`s synfig crash. He was moving 6 layers grouped together and it then crashed on him. Hope this helps abit more.

I am sorry, I don’t exactly know when. But sometimes it may, I will reply here if it does occur.

Yes, it does happen in 1.4.1. As I have noticed it mostly occurs when I am moving a group. Moving single layer doesn’t cause any crash. Sometime it just crash when I am about to begin to drag and drop (at the moment when I click and the drag is just started, it crashes).

No. It means there is something wrong with Synfig we should fix :frowning: But we need more details to be able to understand when and why it crashes in order to be able to fix it.

Ok.

  1. Was he dragging in work area or the layers ‘names’ in Layers panel?
  2. Does your student remember if it crashed while dragging or when he released the mouse button (i.e. on dropping)?

Recently we fixed a crash when user accidentally drag a group into itself. This fix will be available in 1.4.2.

From what the student said he was moving the group on the animation pan. im afraid i dont know at what point it was it crashed. seems like when he released the mouse button.

You mean he was visually dragging the layers here:
https://wiki.synfig.org/Category:Canvas_Window

or their labels here:
https://wiki.synfig.org/Layers_Panel

On the cavas window.

Sorry we just had another crash where a student was trying to import a background and it just crashed/closed.

Is there any chance it could be a hardware issue? is the program using more than 8gb ram perhaps?

Can you provide us the image?

Hm
I would have to try it on Windows
only if the image is large enough

Background 1 (Walk On Road)

This is the file. Nothing seems wrong from what i can see with anything which is strange. Two students can do the same thing and one will crash and one wont. Its really throwing me off.

Yeah, it looks like a totally random crash

Hi again,

We have only found one common thing that seems to be occuring. If the students open the file direct from thier user area rather than through synfig they get the following error:

unable to load “file location”
Cont find linked file #project.sifz

Is Synfig installed or portable? And what is the original filename?

Is the file in the same computer or in a network shared folder?

Synfig is installed on the PC. The filename is backgrounds edited together. The file is on a server where all the students saved areas are.

OK. There are some know issues about it.
Just checking: it opens a file in a file server from Synfig Open file dialog, but not via double-click on file icon?

I’ll ask some further questions because only now I read the word ‘linked’ above:

  1. Did user copy some file contents and pasted on another?
  2. Is there a file name ‘project.sifz’ on the same folder of the file he launched?
