For those on Linux, there are some improvements coming to the next release of OpenShot Video Editor and one in particular may be of interest to animators:

Image Sequence auto-detection

I’ve gotten really comfortable with the Blender VSE, but I may give OpenShot a test drive when the next version rolls out.

Yeah, I remember reading that at OMGUbuntu. About damn time, I say! O_O I’ve had BIG problems with their video import.
