Newbie question: Creating spotligth effect on a stage

Hi,
I have some cut out pngs on a black background, like say, puppets on a stage. I want to light them one by one, using a spotlight.

Thanks for any answer on how to do this.

Thanks, but not exactly. Like we are sitting in the auditorium, and the light source is behind us.

I tried using a gradient layer, but the spotlight circle goes from black to white, not black to transparent.
