You need to learn how to create shapes/outlines first. Please read here - wiki.synfig.org/wiki/Doc:Creating_Shapes
It would be good if you will read the whole “Diving In” section of the manual (wiki.synfig.org/wiki/Category:Manual) before trying to vectorize soldier.
