How to make outline not get skinny when shape is scaled? And how to make part of an object behind and part in front of another object?

I’m new at this, so I hope these are not a stupid questions. I am trying to make Saturn. I got 2 problems:

  1. To make the rings, I took a circle (with a black outline) and applied the stretch layer to squeeze it into an oval. However, the black outline also was squeezed along with the region. I was hoping to find a way to make the outline a constant thickness (sorta like MS Powerpoint works). Is there a way to make this happen?

  2. I need to make the far half of the rings behind Saturn and the near half in front. I figured I could break into two halves, but I’m not sure how to do that without a line being drawn where they meet. What is the best way to do this?

Instead of using group transformation widget to scale the object, select the object and ctrl +a all the vertices and use scale option from the tool box.
