(Sorry if I’m posting this in the wrong place but I’m a new user and finding it difficult to navigate this forum)
I’m using two monitors and Synfig 1.4.5, It crashes if I use the color picker. The forum has this problem first listed in 2021.so I’m sure it must have been resolved by now. Can anyone tell me where I should be looking?
Thanks
Could you please tell us your OS name?
Did you try dev versions?
Having dual screen also, I don’t have this issue in Linux with 1.4.5 (nor other versions)
It is probably due graphic drivers settings.
For example, I had all the Qt apps instantly crashing when dragged to the secondary screen (external).
A quite common issue but almost nothing found on the net.
I had to prime-select nvidia
while it was only on-demand
.
Once the main graphic card is set to nvidia (after a reboot), no crash anymore.
Edit BobSynfig : post from a deleted spammer, which was useful in this case
Yeah, the color picker crash on dual monitors has been around since at least 2021. It still affects version 1.4.5, especially with different screen resolutions or scaling.
A common workaround is to move Synfig to your primary monitor before using the color picker. You might also check for newer development builds or report your setup on the bug tracker.
Brilliant! Thank you!
Running the user interface on Screen2 works without crashing. If I drag it back to Screen1, it crashes as soon as I use the eye dropper tool.
Hi Bob,
Just to complete the the topic, I’m using Windows 11.
I don’t understand “prime-select nvidia” but in any case, JamesFigs’ solution does the trick.
Thanks for your suggestion (whatever it means!).
As I wrote it, I’m under Linux, for Windows the way of setting GFX cards is as bit different.
But you should try enabling the dedicated GFX card as main display adapter in case of dual screen.
Otherwise, automatic selection (on-demand) could make the things hard when a graphic app requests material acceleration, obtains it, but is then changing of “context” when moved on another display.
Maybe it wouldn’t crash for an app like Notepad, but definitely better a bit higher power consumption rather that continuous crashes
JamesFigs’ solution does the trick.
He was programmed for such a purpose

OK, thanks
I bit of searching tells me I don’t have a dedicated graphics card, just the integrated Intel UHD Graphics 630,
It seems strange that this is a high powered, requirement. I’m not a gamer but I use 2 displays all the time with a variety of programs. Certainly colour picking normally just works the way you’d expect,
But Synfig is free, so I’m grateful to have any kind of solution!
