Hello
I am new to synfig. I have followed the steps provided using the https://gumroad.com tutorial. Specifically " synfig-02-first-animation" and “synfig-03-rendering” I am able to create the animation and view it using the “Preview” option. However when I attempt to Render I get an .avi file that is .05 seconds long. It displays a black screen. Any suggestions as to why would be appreciated.

Please try to select ffmpeg options and use a different video player (VLC)
Could you please indicate you:
- Synfig version / bits
- Os / version / bits
Version 1.2.2 64 bit
Windows 10 Home 64 bit
Which VLC would you recommend?

VLC 32 or 64bit will be fine for your system (64 prefered of course)
Try to use a render resolution <780 (for example 1280x720, my big nose smells that you use Full HD), some errors have been reported for >=780 and only a partial frame is rendered (tiny file is produced)
Also try to use a 1.3.11 64bit (portable) instead of 1.2.2
