Importing pic to fit canvas size

Hello everyone,

I’ve tried importing a pic to fit my canvas size, but am completely stumped. This is totally confusing! I read this:

and this:

and feel I understand the canvas properties dialogue box even less! All I want to do is set up a canvas at 1280 x 720 and import a pic that has the same resolution. When I do this, my pic is either way smaller than the canvas area or way bigger.

Can anyone guide me through this?

I think I have the answer to this and would like to share it. Basically, Gimp and Synfig disagree on the resolution of the imported image. To overcome the issue, you need to fiddle with the Image Span setting in Canvas Info, as per the following video:
