Exporting 16:9 to movie on Ubuntu 15.10

Has anybody out there managed to render 16:9 format to movie on Ubuntu 15.10 with Synfig? I can render using magick++ to animated gif very well, but trying .mpg squashes my canvas to something like 4:3

Ok - I have it working (if anybody else has the same problem) exporting to PNG frames and then using ffmpeg:

ffmpeg -f image2 -pattern_type glob -i '*.png' output.mp4

For some reason I still can’t quite ‘see’ setting the ffmpeg framrate to 24, -r 24, squashes my canvas.
