making an animated video as a wedding present for next year; have a fairly clear “storyboard” developed, but zero technical knowledge to get this from a Word document to video! So I may be back for any tips etc . . .

On the synfig wiki documentation you will found a step by step tutorial to have a good diving into synfig concept, and also numerous tutorials to have more deep on specific point. Also, searching onto forum you will found answer to a lot of users already solved questions.
