Following the tutorial for downloading, I have downloaded synfig studio but do not know how to use it and would appreciate your advice on where to find a synfig animation tutorial for a beginner.

The best place to find tutorials is the wiki.
We are moving to a new wiki site, reorganizing the content and moving the non documentation to a website powered by joomla.

A good place for asking for a particular issue is here or the chat (irc.freenode.net#synfig).
Also don’t forget to assign the application to a single core if you’re under windows: Tom’s Hardware guide Taskassign goes missing....
